New class action confirmed for $10,000 claims
For almost 250 years, the United States has celebrated its independence, with festivities ranging from parades to fireworks. Amidst the revelry, news of a confirmed data breach class action settlement has emerged, offering eligible individuals the opportunity to claim $10,000. This unexpected windfall adds to the jubilation of the holiday season.
The saga began with the establishment of the popular retail pharmacy chain, Rite Aid, in 1962. Providing a diverse range of products from prescriptions to health goods, the chain served a vast customer base until its unfortunate bankruptcy and subsequent closure of hundreds of stores in 2023. To compound its woes, Rite Aid fell victim to a cyberattack in 2024.
On June 6, 2024, a hacker from Ransomhub infiltrated the pharmacy chain’s systems, compromising the personal data of 2.2 million customers who had made purchases between June 2017 and July 2018. The breach exposed sensitive information such as names, addresses, and birth dates. However, Rite Aid reassured customers that no Social Security numbers, financial details, or patient data were compromised during the incident. Despite denying any fault, Rite Aid agreed to a $6.8 million settlement to address the allegations and implement enhanced cybersecurity measures.
Eligibility for claiming from the settlement is subject to specific criteria, ensuring only those directly impacted can benefit. Individuals who experienced data breaches in the Rite Aid incident, received official notifications in July 2025, possess documented evidence of losses, and submitted a valid claim form prior to the deadline are considered class members. For those affected by the breach but who did not receive a formal notification, reaching out to the Settlement Administrator is recommended for further guidance. The allocated settlement funds will cover class member compensation, legal fees, administrative expenses, and awards for class representatives, potentially amounting to $10,000 per individual.
In addition to monetary restitution, Rite Aid pledges to provide free credit monitoring and identity theft protection services to all notified class members for a year. The compensation amount claimable hinges on documented expenses or losses incurred as a result of the data breach, with the potential to receive up to $10,000 by presenting evidence such as unauthorized bank account transactions. This settlement not only highlights the importance of cybersecurity but also reinstates faith in the justice system by offering recourse to those affected by data breaches.
