Viki reaches $8 million settlement in privacy class action lawsuit
Viki, an online streaming platform, recently settled a class action lawsuit for $8,000,000. The lawsuit claimed that Viki disclosed users’ identities and video-viewing preferences to Facebook without their consent, violating federal law. Consumers who had a Viki account and accessed videos on Viki.com while also having a Facebook account between January 12, 2016, and July 30, 2024, may be eligible to receive a cash payment ranging from $30 to $150 from the settlement.
To be eligible for the settlement payment, individuals must have had both a Viki and Facebook account during the specified time frame, accessed video content on Viki.com, and been located in the United States at the time of access. The final payment amount will depend on the number of valid claims filed, with payments expected to be distributed after final approval from the court and completion of claim processing.
Claimants must submit a claim form online by the deadline of September 22, 2025. Those who did not receive a settlement notice with a unique ID and PIN can request one from the settlement administrator. Proof of an active Facebook account is required, with instructions provided on the online claim form and FAQ page on the settlement website. Claimants who cannot access their Facebook account must provide a specific link for verification.
In addition to the cash payment to eligible claimants, the $8,000,000 settlement fund will cover various costs, including settlement administration costs, attorneys’ fees and litigation costs, service awards to class representatives, and payments to valid claimants. Important dates to note include the deadline to file a claim and opt-out by September 22, 2025, and the final approval hearing on October 21, 2025.
The class action lawsuit alleged that Viki violated the Video Privacy Protection Act by sharing users’ information with Facebook without proper consent. While Viki denied any wrongdoing, it chose to settle to avoid the costs and risks associated with continued litigation. Payments will be issued to eligible claimants once the court grants final approval of the settlement and the claim processing is finalized.
