UK’s roadmap to 2030 objective outlines path to solar-powered future

The recent publication of the Solar Roadmap for a ‘United Kingdom powered by Solar’ by the UK Government marks a significant milestone for the country’s solar industry. This comprehensive document, developed through the collaborative efforts of government and industry bodies, outlines a clear path to achieve 45-47GW of solar energy deployment in the UK by the year 2030.

Among the key contributors to the development of the Solar Roadmap is Lightsource bp, which has been actively engaged with the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) since the inception of the Solar Taskforce in April 2023. Working alongside Solar Energy UK and other major industry stakeholders, Lightsource bp’s involvement in the Taskforce was led by Alex Desouza, General Counsel for EMEA, who played a crucial role as a core group member and chaired the Taskforce’s Communication Subgroup.

The Roadmap lays out a strategic framework for achieving the UK’s 2030 solar targets, highlighting key actions that need to be taken by the government, Ofgem, industry players, and trade bodies to accelerate the deployment of solar energy. These actions span various areas, including networks, supply chains, planning, and permitting. To oversee the successful implementation of the roadmap, a new joint Government-industry Solar Council will be established.

Alex Desouza, EMEA General Counsel at Lightsource bp, emphasized the significance of the Solar Roadmap for the UK’s energy sector and the pivotal role that solar energy plays in shaping the country’s future energy landscape. By increasing the deployment of solar energy and battery storage, the UK can effectively manage energy costs, support economic growth, and enhance the resilience of businesses.

The focus of the Solar Roadmap is on shifting towards delivery for CP30, presenting a unique opportunity for the UK to rally around a shared goal of building stronger communities, supporting farmers, and accelerating the transition to renewable and domestic energy generation.

In conclusion, the Solar Roadmap sets a clear trajectory for the UK to harness the power of solar energy and make significant strides towards achieving its sustainability and energy goals. Through collaboration and collective efforts, the UK’s solar industry is poised for substantial growth and contribution to the country’s overall energy transition to a more sustainable and resilient future.
