Trump’s foreign policy is expensive and shameful.

In a recent commentary by Christopher Anderson, it was noted that the administration’s early actions have shown significant progress. However, this “progress” seems to have come at a cost, particularly in damaging relationships with neighboring countries like Canada and Mexico. The administration’s tariffs appear to serve the interests of President Donald Trump’s wealthy acquaintances, rather than fostering positive relationships with our neighbors.

Furthermore, Trump’s approach to foreign policy has led to neglecting Ukraine while cozying up to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Despite promising to put an end to the conflict on his first day in office, Trump’s actions have embarrassed Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the Oval Office. His Middle East deals have also raised questions about whether they truly benefit the country or serve Trump’s personal interests.

Throughout his presidency, Trump’s deals have consistently been “two weeks away” from completion, yet never seem to materialize. His transactional approach to international relations underscores his belief that the United States should be repaid for its defense spending on Ukraine. As a result, our global standing has been diminished, largely due to the actions of the current administration.

In the words of Jon Jacobson from Lutherville, our standing on the world stage has likely never been lower, thanks to the decisions of this administration. Trump’s leadership style has been marked by a focus on personal gain and short-term transactional deals, rather than fostering long-term relationships and strategic alliances that benefit the United States as a whole.

Looking ahead, it is essential for those in positions of power to prioritize the country’s interests over personal gain. The damaging effects of shortsighted policies and embarrassing missteps on the international stage must be carefully considered, as they have lasting implications for the United States’ global standing and credibility. By holding leaders accountable for their actions and advocating for a more strategic and diplomatic approach to foreign policy, we can work towards repairing the relationships that have been strained and reshaping the United States’ role in the international community.
