Cachar district cracks down on hoarding during flood crisis

In a significant move to protect consumer interests and maintain market fairness amid the ongoing flood crisis, the Cachar district administration, under the guidance of Kaushik Rai, Minister for Food, Public Distribution, Consumer Affairs, and Barak Valley Development, and as per the directives from Cachar District Commissioner Mridul Yadav, has ramped up efforts to crack down on hoarding and price manipulation. Surprising raids were conducted across Silchar, spearheaded by the Food, Public Distribution & Consumer Affairs Department, to combat exploitative trade practices during a challenging time when the public is already facing natural calamities.

The initiative was led by Additional District Commissioner Dr. Dhrubajyoti Hazarika, ACS, who formed a specialized inspection team led by Mukhyadhar Das, Inspector of Food, Public Distribution and Consumer Affairs. This dedicated team, alongside supporting staff, meticulously inspected and verified stocks in key market areas such as Tarapur, Meherpur, Jailroad, Rongpur, and Sadarghat. These targeted raids aimed to promote transparency in stock declarations, deter hoarding, and restore equitability in the retail landscape amidst the district’s vulnerability.

One of the notable findings emerged from Meherpur, where a substantial warehouse was discovered housing a large quantity of potatoes—56,000 packets of Bengal potatoes and 13,000 packets of Agra potatoes, each weighing 50 kg. This revelation allayed concerns of a potato shortage in the area and underscored the necessity for stringent monitoring to prevent artificial scarcity. The inventory check confirmed that potato supplies in the region are sufficient to meet consumer demands.

Furthermore, prices of potatoes were assessed during the raids. Officials confirmed that Bengal potatoes are being sold at Rs 16–18 per kg, while Agra potatoes are priced at Rs 21–22 per kg—falling within acceptable market ranges. This price stability reinforced the administration’s belief that the prevailing panic over escalating costs was mainly fueled by misinformation and unscrupulous trade practices, which the department is resolutely addressing through ongoing supervision.

The district administration has issued a stern warning to traders, stressing the importance of adhering to fair trade standards. Any violation will result in severe repercussions. The raids serve as a stark reminder of the government’s zero-tolerance approach towards market manipulation and its unwavering commitment to consumer protection.

By promptly and decisively taking action, the Cachar district administration has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that essential goods remain reasonably priced and readily available for all, even amidst adversities. The continuous surveillance and enforcement efforts highlight a broader determination to maintain price integrity, eradicate profiteering, and safeguard the economic welfare of every individual during this challenging period, as stated in a press release.
