Increasing choices at J Pereira Fernandes (JPF) by utilizing Monforts Dual Heating

Energy efficiency is a crucial factor in Portugal’s textile industry, prompting J Pereira Fernandes (JPF) to enhance its fabric finishing capabilities with a new biomass-fueled boiler room for CO2 neutral production. Located in Guimarães, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001, JPF operates as a vertically integrated facility handling spinning, yarn dyeing, weaving, fabric dyeing and finishing, and cutting and sewing, primarily focusing on 100% cotton goods for home textiles with an annual capacity of 5.5 million meters.

Partnering with Monforts, JPF initially invested in a Montex stenter with a 3.2-meter width in 1987, followed by a second model in 2020 and a Monforts sanforizing line. Monforts recently upgraded the latest Montex stenter at JPF with a dual heating unit, enabling flexibility in using either steam or gas for heating. This upgrade aligns with JPF’s commitment to reduce energy costs and enhance competitiveness, especially against Asian manufacturers.

Thomas Päffgen, Monforts Area Sales Manager, emphasized the benefits of the dual heating unit in optimizing biomass-powered steam heating for temperatures up to 160°C and utilizing gas heating for higher temperatures. JPF’s managing director, Sandra Fernandes, highlighted the company’s proactive approach in reducing energy consumption, implementing various measures from optimizing yarn dyeing machines to utilizing efficient motors and pumps, inverters, economizers, and heat exchangers.

In addition to energy-saving initiatives, JPF has transitioned to LED lighting, with solar energy supplying 50% of electricity needs during daytime shifts. Fernandes emphasized JPF’s experience and expertise, gained since its establishment in 1933 as a weaver and full vertical integration in 1970, as a significant advantage. Operating with low dyeing temperatures and liquor ratios, focusing on quality control to minimize returns and collaborating with local suppliers for cost-effective transportation further enhance JPF’s competitive edge.

Although the direct cost savings from the new Monforts dual heating unit and biomass boiler are still being evaluated based on price fluctuations, JPF appreciates the flexibility it offers in selecting the most cost-effective heating option daily. Continuously investing in energy-efficient solutions, JPF expressed gratitude towards Monforts and local partner Maquicontrolo for their support in implementing the project. The seamless collaboration between JPF and Monforts underscores a shared commitment to sustainability, efficiency, and innovation in Portugal’s textile industry.
