Lion Electric saved by Quebec lifeline from the ashes

A fresh injection of money and a government subsidy for electric school buses in Quebec have provided a glimmer of hope for Lion Electric, a struggling electric bus and truck manufacturer. With debts nearing $250 million, significant layoffs, and unresolved issues with school districts, Lion Electric’s financial woes have attracted legal scrutiny from various law firms investigating potential violations of federal securities laws.

Despite these challenges, the reinstatement of a government incentive program for electric school buses in Quebec has brightened the prospects for Lion Electric. This new rebate program, introduced in response to proposed tariffs on Canadian-built electric vehicles by the Trump administration, offers up to $240,000 in incentive funding for new Lion Electric school buses. This subsidy is higher than what American-made bus manufacturers like Blue Bird or Thomas Built would receive.

Encouraged by this subsidy and the potential for growth, Vincent Chiara, president of Groupe MACH, and Pierre Wilkie, a director on Lion Electric’s board, have opted to infuse additional capital into the company. While exact figures are undisclosed, this investment is expected to support Lion Electric’s Canadian manufacturing facility in St-Jérôme, albeit falling short of reopening the factory in Joliet, Illinois.

Guy Martel, a lawyer representing Lion Electric, expressed cautious optimism during a court hearing, acknowledging the challenges faced by the company but highlighting the progress achieved. This renewed financial backing, though significant, leaves the outcomes of ongoing legal battles and operational issues uncertain. However, it does offer a ray of hope for Lion Electric to navigate through its current predicament.

The future trajectory of Lion Electric remains uncertain, but the recent developments suggest a potential pathway for the company to recover from its financial setbacks and refocus its efforts on building a sustainable business. As Lion Electric navigates through these challenging times, the new subsidy for electric school buses in Quebec could serve as a lifeline for the company to regain its footing and move towards a more stable future.
