Innovative Leader at University of Miami
Andrew Co is a shining example of a dedicated, compassionate, and influential student leader at the University of Miami School of Law. His unwavering commitment to giving back to the School of Law and the wider community is evident through his development of a new mentorship program, advocacy for Asian American law students, and engagement in international legal experiences.
Originally from Manila, Philippines, Co came to the School of Law with a goal of providing legal assistance to immigrants, a commitment he upholds through his involvement in the school’s experiential learning programs. His participation in the Immigration Clinic involved preventing the deportation of a Somali journalist and a Bahamian woman with a disabled son, showcasing his dedication to serving underrepresented communities. He volunteered over 160 hours of pro bono legal services as part of this clinic, highlighting his passion for using his legal skills to make a meaningful impact on the lives of others.
Co’s dedication to engaging with the global legal community is evident in his participation in the International Moot Court Program. Competing in cities like Mexico City, Budapest, and Vienna, Co has forged connections with law schools around the world and received recognition for his work as a student arbitrator.
As a first-generation law student without connections to Miami, Co has worked to create a sense of community throughout his law school journey. As the Student Bar Association president, he led the implementation of a mentoring program for first-year law students, aimed at fostering a supportive environment and providing valuable resources for incoming students. The program, consisting of mentoring pods that meet regularly, has received praise for its effectiveness in helping students navigate law school challenges and building connections between students and alumni.
In addition to his role as Student Bar Association president, Co served as president of the Asian Pacific American Law Students Association, where he advocated for Asian and Pacific Islander students and facilitated connections with local Asian American attorneys. His commitment to inclusivity was recognized through his historic election as the first Filipino-born Student Bar Association president.
Co’s academic excellence and dedication to community service were further acknowledged through the awarding of The Meenu Sasser Family Scholarship by the Asian Pacific American Bar Association of South Florida. Named after Judge Meenu Talwar Sasser, this scholarship honors students who, like Co, embody a passion for using the law to positively impact the community.
Through his leadership, advocacy, and commitment to service, Andrew Co has left a lasting impact at the University of Miami School of Law and serves as an inspiration to his peers.
