General Motors to pay $35 million to truck owners impacted by defects

After years of legal battles, General Motors has finally agreed to pay a hefty sum of $35 million to settle a class-action lawsuit concerning a defect in the CP4 fuel pump found in thousands of Chevrolet and GMC vehicles sold in the United States. This defect specifically affected the Duramax engines installed in Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks between 2011 and 2016, some of the most popular truck models in the country.

The lawsuit stems from the sudden failure of the CP4 high-pressure injection pump, which can lead to serious engine damage and costly repairs for vehicle owners. This defect has caused significant inconveniences for users who have had to bear the financial burden of repairs on their own. The affected vehicles must have been purchased between March 1, 2010, and September 13, 2024, from select dealerships located in California, Texas, New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois, or Iowa.

In response to the class-action lawsuit, General Motors has agreed to settle the case without admitting guilt, but rather to put an end to the legal proceedings and compensate affected owners. The $35 million settlement will be divided among three categories of compensation based on the type of repair needed and whether the vehicle is still in the owner’s possession. The actual amount of compensation will vary depending on the number of claimants who join the class-action lawsuit.

The reimbursement process offers three options for affected owners:

1. Owners who no longer have the vehicle and did not pay for any repairs can receive between $400 and $800 from the $5 million allocated for this group.
2. Current owners who require repairs to the CP4 pump can receive a 50% reimbursement of the repair cost if the repair is completed at an authorized dealership within a year of the settlement’s final approval or before the vehicle reaches 200,000 miles.
3. Those who paid for repairs out of warranty can claim between $6,356 and $12,712 from the fund allocated for this group.

This settlement marks a significant milestone for owners of affected vehicles who have faced the consequences of the CP4 pump defect. It serves as a form of recompense for the financial burden and inconvenience caused by the sudden pump failures and subsequent repairs. Owners are encouraged to review the details of the settlement and determine their eligibility to claim compensation based on their individual circumstances.
