2 Chinese nationals identified as executives in troll farm targeting the Philippines Securities and Exchange Commission
Two Chinese citizens have been identified as key figures in the alleged activities of a local company hired by the Chinese embassy in Manila to discredit the Philippine government. Government records revealed that Li Min and Li Pin, both of Chinese nationality, are among the five incorporators of Infinitus Marketing Solutions in Makati. In addition to the Chinese nationals, three Filipino individuals—Ruby Benig Gestiada, Christine Bergantinos Li, and Myka Isabel Basco—are also listed as company incorporators.
Interestingly, records from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) indicate that Li Min, Li Pin, and Christine Bergantinos Li all share the same address in Taguig City, while Gestiada and Basco reside in Cavite and Paranaque, respectively. Established in 2019, Infinitus had a capital stock of P3 million based on SEC data.
The company’s Articles of Incorporation outlined its primary purpose, which includes engaging in integrated marketing communication services like public relations and event management. However, they are not involved in advertising or mass media activities. Despite this official description, Senate Majority Leader Francis Tolentino has accused Infinitus of being a front for Chinese attempts to undermine the Philippine government and its detractors.
In a recent hearing of the special committee on Philippine maritime and admiralty zones, Tolentino alleged that Infinitus was fulfilling the role of providing “keyboard warriors” to support these disinformation efforts. He claimed that the Chinese embassy in Manila had financed a clandestine operation to run a troll farm through Infinitus, aiming to spread misinformation and influence public opinion against the Philippine government and its citizens.
While attempts to obtain a response from Infinitus regarding these allegations have been unsuccessful, the essence of the accusations remains concerning. Tolentino’s assertion of hidden motives behind the Chinese embassy’s payments highlights the gravity of the situation. It implies a deliberate effort to manipulate public discourse and perceptions, posing a threat to the integrity of the democratic process in the Philippines.
The involvement of foreign actors in attempts to destabilize domestic affairs is a serious matter that warrants thorough investigation and appropriate action. The revelations regarding Infinitus Marketing Solutions and its suspected role as a tool for Chinese disinformation campaigns raise broader questions about the need for vigilance in safeguarding national interests and democratic principles.
As the implications of these allegations unfold, it is essential for authorities to address the underlying issues and ensure accountability for any illicit activities. The protection of the Philippine government’s sovereignty and the rights of its people must be upheld against external influences seeking to undermine the integrity of the country’s institutions and democratic processes. The need for transparency, accountability, and a commitment to upholding the rule of law are paramount in safeguarding national interests and democratic values from such malicious attempts at manipulation.
