Medical imaging AI company Gleamer enters MRI market through two acquisitions
French radiology AI software provider Gleamer is now venturing into the realm of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) after focusing on enhancing X-rays and mammographies. Gleamer’s expansion into MRI comes through two strategic mergers and acquisitions – combining forces with Caerus Medical, a startup specializing in AI-powered MRI analysis, and integrating with Pixyl.
Gleamer represents a new wave of startups leveraging artificial intelligence to revolutionize medical imaging. Following the emergence of tech-focused startups in the early 2010s, only a select few have managed to make significant advancements in the sector, with some undergoing consolidation. Nanox and Tempus, for example, acquired Zebra Medical Vision and Arterys, respectively.
Established in 2017, Gleamer has been dedicated to developing an AI assistant for radiologists, introducing a collaborative approach to medical imaging analysis. By providing radiologists with an additional tool to enhance diagnostic accuracy, Gleamer aims to streamline medical image interpretation. With a global presence across 45 countries and 2,000 institutions utilizing its technology, Gleamer has processed over 35 million examinations and obtained CE and FDA certifications for its bone trauma interpretation solution.
Recognizing the limitations of a universal radiology model, Gleamer has adopted a specialized approach, developing internal teams dedicated to mammographies and CT scans. Recently launching a mammography product developed over an 18-month period, Gleamer’s proprietary AI model has been trained on 1.5 million mammographies to maximize diagnostic efficiency.
In collaboration with the French government’s GPU cluster, Jean Zay, Gleamer is focused on enhancing its capabilities in CT scans for cancer detection. However, tackling the complexities of MRI imaging requires a diversified skill set due to the multitude of tasks involved, such as segmentation, detection, characterization, classification, and multi-sequence imaging.
To accelerate its entry into the MRI domain, Gleamer has strategically acquired Caerus Medical and partnered with Pixyl, both of which boast extensive experience in AI-powered MRI analysis. By leveraging the expertise of these two entities, Gleamer aims to expand its MRI capabilities and coverage across various use cases over the next few years.
Gleamer’s CEO, Christian Allouche, emphasizes the importance of specialized expertise in enhancing medical imaging solutions, highlighting the unique challenges associated with MRI analysis beyond standard detection tasks. Through targeted acquisitions and collaborations, Gleamer is poised to establish a comprehensive suite of solutions for MRI interpretation, offering a robust platform for radiologists worldwide.
