UnitedHealthcare agrees to pay $2.5 million in settlement claims: Find out who qualifies and how to file

UnitedHealthcare has reached a settlement agreement to pay $2.5 million to resolve a class-action lawsuit accusing the company of violating federal telemarketing laws. The lawsuit alleges that UnitedHealthcare made unsolicited telemarketing calls using artificial or prerecorded voices without recipients’ prior consent, which is a violation of the Telephone Consumer Protection Act.

Individuals who received one or more of these calls between January 9, 2015, and January 9, 2019, from UnitedHealthcare’s Medicare and retirement non-licensed retention team, community and state national retention team, or Medicare and retirement collections team, and who were not UnitedHealthcare members or authorized third parties, are eligible for payment. Around 12,000 individuals are affected by this settlement.

Eligible individuals were notified of the settlement through email or mail and were provided with instructions on how to file a claim. It is estimated that the settlement payments will range from $350 to $1,000 per individual, depending on the number of claims filed.

To claim a payment, eligible individuals must submit their claim by April 15, 2025, either through an electronic form online or by downloading and mailing a PDF claim form. Failure to submit a claim by the deadline will result in no payment being received.

If the settlement receives final approval from the court on June 20, 2025, eligible individuals who filed valid claims will receive their settlement payments. Those who do not make a claim will not receive any payment.

This settlement comes in the wake of a massive data breach affecting approximately 190 million UnitedHealth Group customers. The breach, which occurred in February, led to disruptions in UnitedHealth-owned Change Healthcare systems, preventing healthcare providers from processing payments. The breach exposed sensitive customer information such as identifications, bank records, and health data to hackers. Affected individuals have been notified, and the total number of impacted individuals will be determined at a later date.
