Santa Rosa Macy’s stores spared from closure list
Great news for Santa Rosa! Macy’s recently announced that they will be closing 66 stores by February and 150 stores within the next three years. This news had some customers worried about the fate of the two Macy’s locations in Sonoma County. However, both the Santa Rosa Plaza and Coddingtown stores are safe from closure.
While nine Macy’s locations in California are closing, the Corte Madera store, the Newark store, and San Mateo’s furniture gallery are among those scheduled to shut down. It’s worth noting that the Downtown Plaza Macy’s listed for closure is actually in Sacramento’s Downtown Commons, not in Santa Rosa Plaza.
The North Bay stores, including the one in San Rafael’s Northgate mall and Westfield Solano mall in Fairfield, are also not on the closure list. Despite this, the Northgate mall in San Rafael is set for redevelopment over the next 15 years.
Macy’s strategic plan includes closing underperforming stores to focus on having 350 stores, down from over 500 currently. While it’s unclear if the Santa Rosa locations will close in a different year, the Coddingtown store opened in 1984, just three years after the Santa Rosa Plaza store, which was bringing in $30 million in annual sales by 1984.
Macy’s has had some bumps in the road, like delaying its third-quarter earnings report due to an employee hiding up to $151 million in delivery expenses. However, the retailer plans to expand its upscale Bloomingdale’s and Bluemercury stores despite these challenges.
The Santa Rosa Plaza and Coddingtown stores are only two miles apart, and Santa Rosa is one of just 44 cities to have multiple Macy’s locations. While Simon Malls did not comment on the Santa Rosa Plaza Macy’s, no responses were received from Macy’s Corporate spokesperson nor the Coddingtown store.
